How to Set Up a WiFi QR Code (and When to Use One)
A WiFi QR code stores your network name, password, and security type in a small image. When a phone's camera scans it, the device prompts "Join Network" — no typing, no spelling out a long password, no asking the front desk twice.
What to enter
Network name (SSID) — exactly as it appears on the router, including capitalisation and spaces.
Password — the current WiFi password. If you change it later, you'll need to generate a new code.
Security type — choose WPA/WPA2 for almost all routers made after 2010 (this setting also covers WPA3 networks). Use WEP only for very old hardware, and None for fully open networks.
Where it works best
Guest WiFi cards are the most common use — print one for an Airbnb welcome folder, a café table, a waiting room, or a co-working desk. Place it near eye level and somewhere guests naturally look when they arrive, like next to a "Welcome" sign or on the back of a menu.
Compatibility and security notes
Scanning to connect works natively in the camera app on iOS 11+ and Android 10+; older phones may need a separate QR scanner app. Because the password is embedded in the code, anyone who scans it can read or reuse it — only display a WiFi QR code for networks you're happy to share publicly, and consider a dedicated guest network with its own password rather than your main household or admin WiFi.
